Medicare guide

Review Medicare alongside your veterans benefits.

Understand how Medicare choices may fit with VA benefits before changing coverage you already use.

Before changing coverage

Keep the two conversations connected, but distinct.

Medicare insurance

Military-related benefits

Confirm with your program

Existing benefits and how a coverage change could affect them. Ask a VA office or accredited representative about Aid and Attendance.

VA health care, TRICARE and CHAMPVA have different rules. Confirm the effect of any change with the program that administers your benefits.

Start with the benefits you have

Tell Julianne whether you use VA health care, VA prescription benefits, TRICARE, CHAMPVA, or other coverage. These programs have different rules and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Think about where you get care today and whether you want options outside the VA system. Keeping access to your providers and prescriptions is more important than a plan name.

Medicare Advantage options for veterans

Some Medicare Advantage plans marketed to veterans do not include Part D. These may be described with names such as Honor or Patriot. A plan name alone does not tell you whether it fits your situation.

Some plans offer a Part B premium reduction, often called a giveback, and additional benefits. Availability and amounts depend on the specific plan, location, and eligibility. A giveback is not a promise that every cost will be lower.

Compare access and total costs

Look at provider networks, referrals, prior authorization, travel, and medical cost-sharing. Check how your existing prescription coverage fits before choosing a plan without Part D.

Do not drop VA or other military-related benefits based only on an advertisement. Confirm how a change affects those benefits with the program that administers them.

Aid and Attendance

Eligible veterans or survivors who need help with daily activities may be able to receive Aid and Attendance as an addition to a VA pension. It is a VA benefit, not a Medicare Advantage extra.

Contact your local VA office or an accredited veterans representative for eligibility and application guidance. Julianne can help keep the Medicare insurance questions separate from the VA process.

Prepare for a useful review

  • Current Medicare and military-related coverage.
  • Where you receive medical care and fill prescriptions.
  • Your doctors, travel needs, and coverage concerns.
  • Any benefit notices you want explained.
