Hi, I'm Julianne Dickey, We Care Medicare, your Medicare insurance advocate for the Central Coast. When we sit down together, I don't just look at Medicare, I look at four things. One, health insurance.

This is usually Medicare coverage that gets you your doctors and helps pay the bills. Two, if you need care at home or in a facility, this protects your savings and it protects your family. Three, income versus growth.

Some annuities pay you a steady paycheck for the rest of your life, and others focus on growing your money. The right one depends on what you need. Four, do you want to leave a legacy?

Protect your assets? And these days, there are hybrid policies that combine long-term care and life insurance all in one. If you need care, you're covered.

If you never do, your family still gets the benefit. We don't have to figure it all today. We start where you are.

Give me a call and let's look at the whole picture together.

Income for everyday life

What an annuity does

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. Depending on the contract, it can help accumulate money for retirement or provide an income stream. The timing, guarantees, and payment structure vary.

Start with what you need the money to do. Are you preparing for income years from now, looking for income soon, or trying to protect part of your savings from certain risks? Those are different conversations.

Keep access to money in the picture

Some annuities have surrender charges or other restrictions if you take money out early. Income features may have separate costs and conditions. A guarantee has specific terms and depends on the issuing insurer's claims-paying ability.

Keep emergency savings and near-term spending needs separate in your planning. A product intended for long-term retirement income may not be the right place for money you need readily available.

Questions for a side-by-side comparison

  • When could income begin, and how long could it last?
  • Is the contract fixed, indexed, or another type, and what risks apply?
  • Which amounts are guaranteed and which are illustrations?
  • What fees, surrender charges, or withdrawal restrictions apply?
  • How are beneficiaries treated?
  • What happens if you need more money than the planned income?

IRA rollovers and taxes

If a rollover is part of the discussion, review the existing account before moving it. Compare costs, investment or insurance features, withdrawal rules, and any protections or benefits you could lose.

An annuity inside an IRA does not add a second layer of tax deferral. Tax treatment and suitability depend on your circumstances. Coordinate tax questions with your tax professional.

The right company for your situation

Julianne is an independent agent, so she does not work for a single insurance company. She represents many companies and can compare annuity options across them, then help you choose the company and contract that fits your needs.

Athene and North American are two of the companies she can draw from. You do not have to arrive knowing which product you want. Bring your goals, time horizon, questions, and the details of any existing contracts.

Annuities that can help with long-term care

Some annuities today can be paired with features that help cover qualifying long-term care costs, combining retirement income with care benefits in one contract. Availability, costs, and terms vary by company and contract.

If long-term care is part of your planning, Julianne can explain which options she represents and how they compare with a standalone policy. You can also read the long-term care overview.
